BUILDING DURABLE PEACE (BDP): ENHANCING INTERAGENCY RELATIONSHIPS IN PEACEBUILDING
HRACH GREGORIAN, PH.D. AND LARA OLSON, PEACEBUILDING, DEVELOPMENT AND SECURITY PROGRAM, CMSS, UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY

A critical part of response to post-conflict distress is the maintenance
and support of durable peace between competing factions. Peacebuilding
aims to prevent future traumatic distress and helps support the recovery of
people suffering from post-traumatic distress. This project uses
systems and network analyses to examine the role of national and
international organizations in supporting peace in four areas recovering
from conflict, and how these organizations can improve coordination and
sustainability of activities to ensure lasting peace and support mental
health and wellbeing.

INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING IN RWANDA AND EFFECTS UPON RESILIENCY

PATRICIA PASICK, PH.D., STORIES FOR HOPE-RWANDA

The genocide in Rwanda has left enduring impacts on the population,
including both those old enough to have experienced it directly as well
as those who were younger or who have been born since the genocide.
This project uses an intergenerational storytelling approach, based on
the principles of Narrative Therapy and supported by psychologists, to
support community recovery from the genocide experience. This will also
allow for the documentation and distribution of the experiences shared
by survivors of the genocide. This project includes research into the
effectiveness of the intervention into reducing distress and increasing
positive emotions in people who experienced primary as well as secondary
exposure to the trauma, as well as research into predictors of distress
in Rwanda.
